What does this measure?

Deaths due to drug overdoses, expressed as a rate per 100,000 residents.

Why is this important?

In addition to ending a life tragically, a death by drug overdose profoundly affects surviving relatives and friends. Rising drug overdose deaths can reflect increasing rates of addiction, more potent and dangerous substances, inadequate systems to treat and support addicts, and other worrisome trends.

How is the region performing?

In 2021, the drug poisoning mortality rate in Arkansas was 22 per 100,000 residents, making the state 11th lowest in the nation for this indicator, including the 50 states and Washington D.C. This rate has increased 9 percentage points since 2011. Despite this increase, the state's rate is still lower than the national rate of 34 per 100,000 residents.

Within Arkansas, drug poisoning mortality rate ranged from 13 per 100,000 residents in Desha County to 47 per 100,000 residents in Garland County.
